From there I save it as a Painter file, and open it in Painter 8.1 (Painter 6 is really difficult
to manage withso many layers).
I'll use the eyedropper to select the color of, say, Santa's suit, and any of the 'buildup' tools
like the pencil tool to scribble a darker version of the color to build volume.
(make sure the 'Preserve Transparency' box on the layers pallette is checked.)
Then I'll use the pastel tool to add lighter colors and blues for the shadows.
Then I use a brush imported from Painter 5 called 'Sable chisel tip water' to blend the colors
all painty-like. This is my favorite part. It can also be done with many other brushes if you
set the resat to 0 and the bleed to around 28.
